2023 Lt David Schmitz Foundation Memorial 5K
We're back for the 2023 Lt David Schmitz Foundation Memorial 5K (Virtual ONLY this year)!
The Lt David Schmitz Foundation’s mission is to foster opportunities for young, aspiring aviators to achieve their goal of flying in honor of Lt David “MEZr” Schmitz’s legacy of overcoming life’s obstacles to achieve his dream of flying. The Foundation provides aviation scholarships to be used toward flight school and any tests needed to achieve their private pilot’s license.
After you've paid and registered below, please download Racery's Android App or Apple App and follow the instructions in the email we send you! Make sure all battery savers are off! Then run, walk or wheelchair ANYWHERE. (No gears or motors please!)
The route you take when the App is on will be traced on the race's online map. And you'll automatically be ranked by your time on the race's leader board. Run again if you want to improve your ranking or route design!
If you don't want to use the Apps, you can log your time and distance manually, but your route won't appear on the race's online map.

Memorial 5k
This year’s race was inspired and initiated by the cadets at San Diego State University’s Detachment 075 (Lt Schmitz’s Air Force ROTC Detachment) and serves as the kick off race for the Foundation’s annual 5K to raise funds for aviation scholarships!

Your donation will go directly towards benefiting aviators like Dave, who are passionate, hard working, and have a strong will to succeed!
Race Details:
What: Inaugural Lt David Schmitz Memorial 5K
When: 30 November thru 6 December, 2020 (held virtually through Strava app)
Who: You, your friends, and anyone who supports young aviators!
Why: To support MEZr’s legacy of providing aviation opportunities for aspiring aviators
How: Donate $25 or more to the foundation to sign up for the 5K !

Overview: This year’s race is a virtual 5K from November 30th until December 6th. What is a virtual 5K you might ask? Essentially the race course and start time is up to you! This gives you the flexibility to complete the 5K when and where it is convenient. The “virtual” 5K is enabled by the exercise app Strava, so you will need to create a Strava account if you do not already have one. Please follow the steps below in order to sign up for the 5K!
Step 1: Donate $25 or more (between 1 Nov and 30 Nov) to the Foundation through the GoFundMe website https://www.gofundme.com/.../lt-david-schmitz-scholarship...
Step 2: Using the email provided in your GoFundMe donation, within 24 hours we will send you an invite to the Lt David Schmitz Memorial 5K Strava Running Club in the Strava app
Step 3: Log into Strava and accept the invite to the Lt David Schmitz Memorial 5K Strave Running Club
Step 4: On the date and time of your choice (from 30 November to 6 December), log into Strava on your mobile app and open the event
Step 5: Start the event and record your run, jog, or walk in honor of Lt Schmitz!
Step 6: Post any 5K photos, video, or stories to this Facebook Event page or send them to the Foundation email address (ltdavidschmitzfoundation@gmail.com)
You may also donate and run/walk a 5K without using the Strava app. Any and all participation in this event is welcome, so please feel free to support the cause in any way that works for you!
Lastly, everyone who donates $25 or more is eligible to receive a commemorative patch. If you would like your patch mailed to you, please follow this link to submit a shipping address for the patch to be sent to (US and APO addresses only). NOTE: This is necessary because GoFundMe does not ask for or store your shipping address.
